WhyLamp translates a check-engine code into a plain-English reading with sources. It is not a mechanic, not a parts store, and not legal advice. By using the site, you agree to these terms.
What this is
You type a code from a scanner, or later pull one with a WhyLamp reader. We return a name, urgency, what you can check, and sources. Lookup is free. Garage and the Reader kit are listed and not for sale yet.
What this is not
We do not diagnose your car in person. We do not invent a repair or a part price. We do not book a shop or rank parts. We do not tell you to clear a code as a fix. A recall note is not a finding that this is your car.
Your part
Use the five characters on the scanner. Add make and model when you have them. If the check-engine light is flashing, slow down and get help. The U.S. EPA says that means the engine is skipping badly. A shop or a licensed mechanic still decides a repair.
Sources and limits
A claim needs a source URL or it stays off the page. Shared codes use a public name. Brand-owned codes can mean different things by make. If we cannot show a source, we say so.

Your data
We will never share or sell your personal data. The privacy policy is part of these terms.
No warranty
The site is offered as-is. Codes, recalls, and public pages can change. We are not liable for a repair decision, a missed trip, or a shop invoice. If a court finds a part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still stands.
Changes
We may update these terms. The date at the top is the current version. Lookup stays free unless we say otherwise on this site, in plain words, before we charge.
